I prefer "cyclically cynical" over "anger issues" if I had to label myself. But pop culture pisses me off, especially when people get swept up in causes...just because. "Darfur" has devolved into a pop icon. Yes, people are aware that Darfur is associated with "bad", but they couldn't really care beyond that. Sometimes, these are the same people who associate "pretty" with Paris Hilton. Or "intelligent" with George Bush.
They could also be jaded Amnesty International "activists"....the attention-hungry cause-jumpers, the ones who bought that green shirt because everyone had it, attended the rally in Central Park because OAR was there, and went to the "Drinking for Darfur" event to get discounted martinis and those complimentary self-congratulatory, ego-bloating back-pats. But when it comes down to it, placing Darfur on a map is about as successful as placing Juno, Baghdad, or the Eritrean nation.
Darfur, where a horrific mass genocide and conflict is currently happening, is in the Western Region of Sudan.
I'm following poster "FeelTheBeets" trend with posting music, with a focus on Sudan. "El Amin is a Sudanese folk-hero for his majestic voice and superb oud playing, and the near-blind, reclusive old revolutionary is also a brilliant composer and arranger….. Born in Wad Medani, central Sudan, in 1943, he began learning the oud at the age of 11…wrote his first compositions aged 20, and went on to become honorary president of the Sudanese Artists' and Composers' Society. Frequently in trouble for provoking one military dictatorship - he was jailed by Nimeiri's regime in the 1970s - he moved to Cairo after 1989 to avoid similar run-ins with the National Islamic Front, but returned to Khartoum in 1994 and kept a low profile." Find out more about him
here.
I enjoy his music a lot. He's an amazing artist definitely worth exploring. The "anorexia" reference isn't
completely pulled out of my ass, I'll be posting more later.
